Stalagmite - outer shape (right) and inner view (left), showing bands which are related to changing climate conditions (in particular precipitation) during its time of growth. Thus speleothems might be used as paleoclimate archives. With an assumption of a mean growth rate of dripstones of 1 cm/100 years, this stalagmite may have recorded local climate conditions of the last 3000 years.
