Затем, он снова стал учиться и в 1898 году получил степень бакалавра в университете штата Юта. Аспирантуру Йоханнсен проходил в университете Джона Хопкинса, где и защитил диссертацию по петрографии в 1903 г. по серпентинитам Мэриленда. Альберт Йоханнсен (Albert Johannsen) род. 3 декабря I871, в штате Айова, умер 11 января 1962, в штате Флорида (США).

В 1894 году закончил Иллинойский университет по специальности архитектура и сначала работал несколько лет как помощник архитектора, в том числе и по проектам [[USGS]]. Затем, он снова стал учиться и в 1898 году получил степень бакалавра в университете штата Юта. Аспирантуру Йоханнсен проходил в университете Джона Хопкинса, где и защитил диссертацию по петрографии в 1903 г. по серпентинитам Мэриленда.
После защиты диссертации он был принят в [[USGS]], где работал до 1925 г. Основные работы проходили в шт. Колорадо и Дакота. с 1907 по 1909 гг Йохансен возглавлял петрологический отдел [[USGS]].

В 1909 г. Йоханнсен стал преподавать в университете Чикаго, а в 1910 его приняли в постоянный штат как ассистента. В 1918 году он стал полным профессором Чикагского университета и оставался им до пенсии, на которую вышел в 1937 г.

Известен своим фундаментальным многотомным трудом "Описательная петрография магматических горных пород". Книга "Основы микроскопического определения породообразующих минералов" была переведена на русский язык.
